“With as little a web as this will I ensnare as great a fly as Cassio” |
This is a very important quote. The quote means that with just a small amount of effort Cassio will fall into a trap that he can't get out of and will lead to him being disgraced. The context of the quote is when Iago sees Cassio and Desdemona talking to each other before Othello shows up to the island. The rest of the play is greatly effected by the quote's concept, this is because Othello is brought down by little things that Iago crafted into his plan just like Cassio was.

According to Dictionary.com pontification is a technique where one speaks or behaves in a pompous or dogmatic manner. An example of pontification that can be found in Act 2 is when Iago and Desdemona clash over the nature of women. In this situation Iago is speaking with pontification.
Once Cassio is drunk Iago uses this to his advantage by making Roderigo provoke Cassio in order to get Cassio fired from his job by causing trouble. Which means that Othello will be forced to fire Cassio in order to maintain in good standing with the leaders of Cyprus.
Iago tells Cassio to go talk to Desdemona in order to get his job back as Othello's lieutenant.
This advice will help Iago further his plan because now he can show Othello how much time Cassio is spending with Desdemona. This is also an advantage for Iago because Desdemona will always bring Cassio up in conversation how much she wants Cassio to have his job back which makes it seem as if she likes him as more than a friend.
