Iago is like a pimp because he is trying to get Roderigo together with Desdemona while making Roderigo pay for using Iago's services, however unlike a real pimp Iago doesn't have Desdemona's permission to do so.
The masters and slave speech made by Iago in Act 1 is foreshadowing because in it Iago talks about how even though some people are content to go about doing back breaking work for their lords while asking for nothing in return he will not be like that. Stating that he only follows Othello in order to serve his own purposes saying that "I am not what I am" meaning that on the outside Iago will act like he is happy to serve Othello and only wants the best for him but on the inside Iago is still cruel and unhappy and wants nothing more than to see Othello fail.
The techniques of manipulation that Iago uses on Brabantio are:
|
The effects of the manipulations on Brabantio was that Brabantio turned against Othello believing that Othello bewitched Desdemona into marrying him, because Brabantio no longer thinks of Othello as respectable. The manipulations also turn Brabantio against his daughter Desdemona because he can no longer trust her.
The manipulations also make Desdemona seem like she can't be trusted anymore because she married Othello without her father's knowledge. |
HEll and devil REFERENCES in act 1 |
|
Iago prevents himself from getting in trouble with Brabantio by shouting at him from the shadows and then making Roderigo deal with the situation after Brabantio gets upset.
Iago uses these techniques of manipulation against Othello:
|
The effects of these manipulations is that Othello believes that he can trust Iago and that he wants the best for Desdemona and Othello. Othello also thinks that Iago will always be honest.
|
Iago's Janus reference is relevant due to the fact that Janus is the two faced Roman god of beginnings and transitions. He is also the god of gates, doors, doorways, endings and time.
Brabantio charges Othello of using black magic and sorcery in order to get his daughter Desdemona to marry him.
The military council's workings parallel the earlier meeting between Othello and Brabantio because the military council is split in two about where the Turks are attacking.
|
The military council's workings differ from the battle between Othello and Brabantio because unlike Othello and Brabantio the military council is able to come to an agreement.
|
Othello defends himself against Brabantio's allegations by telling the senate to call Desdemona and have her speak for herself and in the meantime he recounts his side of the story to the council. The entire time Othello is calm and reasonable compared to Brabantio's freak out rage-fest.
The reason that Othello escapes trouble is because he is needed to lead the charge against the Turks at Cyprus. In addition to the military crisis Desdemona gives testimony in front of the senate about how she and Othello got married as well as their courtship. After she shares this with the senate the Duke of Venice also backs Othello up by telling Brabantio that he is lucky to have a son in law as great as Othello.
Iago thinks that love is just "a lust of the blood" and a "permission of the will".
In Iago's soliloquy at the end of Act 1 Iago is telling the audience that he has managed to keep Roderigo on his side as a personal purse adding that he would only spend time with Roderigo for his own amusement and profit. Iago continues his soliloquy by sharing that the reason that he hate Othello so much is because it's the town's gossip that Othello and Iago's wife Emilia have been sleeping together, and even though Iago himself doesn't have any proof he will act as if he has caught the two of them in the act. And since Othello holds Iago in good standing it makes Iago's plan all the easier. He then decides that he will use the fact that Cassio is a gentleman against him by implying that Cassio is only a gentleman towards Desdemona because the two of them are sleeping together in his plot to take down Othello. Since Othello is open minded he trusts that people are being honest with him which is why Iago will be able to lead him around like a ass. With his plan all ready Iago vows that he do everything he can in order to make his vision into a reality.
